Like other Danish painters, Carl Holsoe excels in depicting domestic scenes in which sobriety, calm and an extraordinary uptake and use of light prevail. Standing in front of his paintings one feels as if time has stood still and all noise has ceased to be so that only a floorboard creaking or a pin dropping -quite literally- can be heard. Only Scandinavian artists have succeded in painting silence of such a serene, entrancing quality
Hi Maria-Christina Migone-Benfield! That is the most beautiful comment I've ever seen..thank you so much!
I wish I could write you back in the same manner...but I don't master English that well!!
Holsøe's paintings are wonderful...I actually like them because people (women mostly...) are "sitting in their own world/universe", as we would put it in Danish...hmmm, like "absentminded" and sensitive. Often it is seen in fx. Hammerhøi's paintings as well. I've seen this described as "cold Scandinavian style"...but I'm glad to read that you like it! THANKS!!!!
thank YOU for your reply! I have just lectured this morning on the Danish Painters from Skagen... or In Skagen...Everybody left the lecture saying that: 1) They felt like going to Denmark and visit 2) They wouldn't mind being given any one of those beautiful paintings as a gift 3) Fell in love with the Skagen's Masters of Light... and the handsome depicted there too! Kroyer himself is one of my favourites of all times! I don't find the Scandinavian soul cold at all, but appealingly reserved, calm, polite and serene. IF I did not live in England, I would live in Copenhagen.
Hi again Maria-Christina Migone-Benfield! Thanks again for a wonderful comment! I'm so glad to hear that your lecture went so well and that everyone loved the painters from Skagen! You're right Copenhagen is a wonderful town...but I love england too!!
