I just love this picture

I don't know why, but I've loved this picture since the first time I saw it - it might be because of the portrait he's holding in his left hand, the look in his eyes, or the frost outside - I actually don't know - but I LOVE it! But that's love; hard to pin down in words, right? :O) This oil painting is a portrait of I. Zolotarevsky, 1922 by Borís Mijáilovich Kustódiev (1878-1927).

The appeal is, I believe, because all of the elements are so unlikely! One just has to linger and wonder what the story is? I love it that he is smoking, and have always believed that he was holding a very elegant cigarette case. I would never have thought of a portrait!

Oh yeah, you're so right: A cigarette case! I think I'm just a romantic fool....dreaming of a time when a portrait of the one you love was a MUST ;O) And you're right again: One wonders what the story is!!
Another thing: I've visited you're blog - and love it...I tried to post a comment, but failed....I don't know why.....

I think I prefer the idea of a portrait! Think of the way the "story" changes with the idea of what he's holding - if it is a cigarette case, then one sees him as a very self-centered and self-satisfied,stylish young man, but if he's holding a portrait of a true love, then the smile becomes softer and much more thoughtful ... what do you think?

I'm glad you've liked my blog and surely wish you'd been able to leave a comment ... maybe next time?

And another sudden thought about the painting ... the coat ... he's Russian? The fur must be sable then with a beaver collar - and the leather chair contrasts so strangely with the pattern of the curtains ...

I want the chair!

Oh, if you want the chair you got it ;O) The first thing I saw was the 'window snow flowers' (I don't know what the name is in English).....
