The north of Greenland - Thule - early 1900

Come with me to
The National Museum - let us see some of the Greenlandic exhibition.

East Greenlandic harpoons - decorated in honour
of the animals so that they would let themselves
be caught again and again by the hunters.
Animals loved nice things - and they noticed it

the white ones were for young women

...the red ones for married (elder) women
and
old women used boots that looked like these
but they were dark-bilberry-coloured

I also love the Greenlandic tribute! Happy future Nationhood for them!
Are the boot tops crochet? I ask because my nother crocheted a wonderful tablecloth which seems to be a very similar pattern ... beautiful crafts - I can imagine these filling the long dark hours of wintertime!

Hi Ricka and Raluca!!!
Thanks for your lovely comments :O))
Yes, the boot top are crochet...sometimes lace is used. These boot tops have been a part of the Greenlandic national costume since the early 20th cent. Some says that crochet/or lace became fashion, because Greenladic women liked the Danish women's undergarments (and they really did!)- and this chrochet top is an imitation of the lace on Danish women's pantalettes!
Making a national costume takes a long, long, long time....often different women make different parts...they are used for a girl's first school day, confirmation, wedding and other major parties....
