Nøkken - a male water spirit

Hardingfele by Olav Lomundal, Hoston Orkdal, Norway, 1966
Arne B. Larson Collection, 1979

Nøkken was a male water spirit who usually appear in human form. He played enchanted songs on the violin luring women and children (or sometimes men) to drown in lakes or streams. But not all nøkker/waterspirits thought of harming human beings: If properly approached, he will teach a musician to play so adeptly "that the trees dance and waterfalls stop at his music"

People have believed in him all over Scandinavia....but the best paintings of him are from Norway and Sweden

My mother told me about Nøkken when I was small...
