Nøkken was a male water spirit who usually appear in human form. He played enchanted songs on the violin luring women and children (or sometimes men) to drown in lakes or streams. But not all nøkker/waterspirits thought of harming human beings: If properly approached, he will teach a musician to play so adeptly "that the trees dance and waterfalls stop at his music"link - read more here: TrollMoon & Listen to Norway
