'Kjøbenhavns Vold Aftenen før Store Bededag', 1862 -
'Copenhagen City Ramparts on the Evening Before Store Bededag'
Tomorrow it is the Danish holiday Store Bededag,
translated literally as Great Prayer Day. Traditionally,
the citizens and students of Copenhagen strolled on
the city ramparts on the evening before Store Bededag
(tonight...that is) - see the image above. The students
of Copenhagen University did this in honour of the
many students that died defending Copenhagen during
the assault on Copenhagen in 1659 - but most of all people
did it 'to see each other and to be seen by others'...

Tonight most Danes will eat 'varme hveder'
(above you see my 'hveder') - This tradition
comes from the fact that the bakeries were closed
on St. Bededag and people bought bread for the
following day...and when they came home from
their 'Store Bededag stroll' they enjoyed a cup
of tea and newly baked 'hveder'...before they
got old the followering day
Varme hveder: varme=hot, hveder=old word for a
bun made of wheat/'white' flour
