Fayum mummy portraits

Portrait of a young woman

Strange how we EVERY day learn something new..no matter how old we are...it goes on and on and on...(I thought I one day knew IT ALL :O)...)! Today I've seen Fayum mummy portraits for the first time. Fayum mummy portraits is the name given to a large number of paintings from the first to third century. These are tempera or encaustic paintings, made with hot, pigmented wax on wooden panels, which were inserted into the mummies of the deceased. The surviving paintings are predominantly from the Fayum region in Roman Egypt

I agree with you I have always been fascinated by those portraits , and especially the LOOK they have , their eyes seem to look at us through the ages ... I was lucky to face some a few years ago , I think it was in St Petersburgh , I couldn't take my eyes from them , they seemed to want to give me a message ,I still haven't understood , but they are haunting ....
