Nikolai Astrup (1880 -1940):
'Jonskobål' (midsummernight bonfire)
It is Sct. Hans Eve again! Tonight bonfires are lightened,
mostly on the beaches across the country, and people
gather around them to sing, make picnics and have a
great time! Since the 1920’s it’s been a tradition to make
a witch out of straw and cloth and put it on the bonfire.
The tradition came from Germany. Supposedly by burning
the witches, they are sent away to the mountain of
Bloksbjerg in Germany. So off they go tonight!!
