The 'kolonihave' is a small house-and-garden concept
that started here in Denmark at the end of the 19th
century. The Danish government made parcels of land
in close proximity to the city available for leasing to
give factory workers a chance to get away from the
overcrowded cities and the cramped unhealthy living
conditions. The first houses were literally sheds that
provided temporary shelter. Year after year the owners
decorated, painted and worked in the garden until
each little "kolonihavehus" had its own identy. Today
there are about 60.000 Kolonihaver in Denmark and
more are in the planning....and young people also love
kolonihaver....retro!
