Portraits of African Americans - stereotypes

Happy Coons Danse Negre. William H. Hodgins.
London: Wickins & Co., 1906

Several times I've blogged posts about how African
Americans were portraited in art. I collect images of
African American wet-nurses...take a look here and
follow the links...they make you think, don't they?!

These images are music sheets, 1906-17-
I've found them here...but you can se more images here

Interesting!

The wet nurse post reminded me of the controversial United Colors of Benetton ad, which was supposed to symbolize racial harmony, but instead, in America, taken as an allusion to wet nurses and slavery.

Thanks for the link Kat! Welcome! Oh, yes, I've heard about this add...and in my mind it also brings back 'dark sides of history' (..and it includes the history of SMALL Denmark, as well!).

But have you ever heard about the white woman - the artist Vanessa Beecroft - who was breastfeeding two very dark-skinned children? It also made a lot of people angry, as far as I can tell:

Hm, that does look vaguely familiar. It actually looks like a fascinating documentary. I think I will have to put it on my to-see movies list! Adoption - now that's a topic that I feel will be controversial for many years still to come!
