Grant Wood (1891-1942): 'American Gothic', 1930

The house in the background belonged to Gideon
and Mary Hart Jones, but that is not them you see
in the painting. Grant Wood instead decided to paint,
in his words, '... [...] the kind of people I fancied
should live in that house'. And he didn't have to go far
to find just the right people. The woman in the picture
is Grant's sister Nan Wood-Graham (1900-1990),
and the man is Dr. Byron McKeeby (1867-1950),
Grant's dentist. His sister, Nan, felt embarrassed that
she was depicted as the wife of someone old enough
to be her father, and so she began telling people that the
painting was that of a man and his daughter
