Miniature eye portraits

A miniature eye portrait with a diamond teardrop

'Eye miniatures', where one eye of the sitter
was painted, were all the rage from 1790 to 1810.
Most were tiny and set as brooches

Dear Mette,
These miniature eye portraits are now on exhibit at the Birmingham Museum of Art in my hometown of Birmingham, AL. They are all in a collection owned by an ophthalmologist of all things. We hope to see it soon and I will let you know when we do. What a small world! Thinking of you,
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,

That sounds so interesting...yes, please go see it...and please tell me if it was a good exhibition :O) Oh, I would like to see them live too - I think these brooches are smaller than I imagine them to be. Why don't we make miniatures nowadays - it would be so lovely to carry one of these small portraits/eye-portraits brooches of our beloved ones - human or animal!
