Serpent dragon snakes

Serpent Ouroboros. A single serpent dragon
or snake seizes its tail and forms the ouroboros.
It is crowned. In a square around it are 'The fixed fire'
at the top left; 'The Holy Earth' on the bottom left and
the 'First Paradise' at the lower right

From the 18th century alchemical work by
Abraham Eleazar the Jew, 'Uraltes chymisches Werck',
Erfurt, 1735, that contains the work entitled 'Donum Dei'
by Simon (Samullis ) Baruch.

Ouroboros. In front of a tree bare of leaves, two serpent
dragons seize each other's tail and form an ouroboros. The
upper snake is winged and wears a crown. On the left
foreground a tulip-like flower is growing

Many thanks for this very interesting post, Mette! I read your most recent post about the Chimera too and found it very intriguing as well.

The Ouroboros image has been seen in many parts of the world. I've heard that it is featured in North European mythology(Norse mythology?)as well. Do you often see ouroboros desgins in Denmark? Interestingly, several maps of our archipelago which were created in medieval times look just like the ouroboros. The ouroboros must have deep and profound meaning!!

Hi Sapphire! Yes, we see Ouroboros image from many parts of the world - personally I haven't seen a lot of Danish Ouroboros images (but this might because of my igorance...I'm sure! I only know images from the Norse mythology, like you say: Midgårdsormen - the Midgard Serpent...that silly, bad guy - so to speak - was eating its own tail...but if he is/was "a true Ouroboros symbol", I actually don't know...
