I don't know how or why the artists of this period captured so well the old legends, but they did. And they've heavily influenced us ever since -- which makes me think legends aren't "once upon a time," but constantly growing, as if time weren't an element.
They are amazing the illustrations of that time - here in Scandinavia it was a time for romaticing the Nordic past...in art, architecture...litterature etc. So I think that must be one of the major reasons why we see these amazing illustrations...
