Women with a kokoshnik

The kokoshnik is a Traditional Russian head-dress worn
by women and girls to accompany the sarafan - a long, shapeless
jumper dress (pinafore) worn as Russian folk costume by women
The kokoshnik is patterned to match the style of the sarafan and
can be pointed or round. It is tied at the back of the head with long
thick ribbons in a large bow. The forehead is sometimes decorated
with pearls. The woman or the girl usually wears her hair in a plait.

Until the time of Peter the Great, it was worn only by girls and
unmarried women, without veil or headscarf, showing hair, including
plait. Married women wore a version of the kokoshnik which was a
tall hat which is decorated like kokoshnik, covering all the hair and
they also wore with it veil underneath or headscarf over this type
of kokoshnik.

Ball in the Winter Palace, 1903 was a famous luxurious ball
during the reign of the emperor Nicholas II of Russia in the
Winter Palace, St. Petersburg (February 11 and 13). All the
visitors were in fancy dresses on a fashion of 17th century
(times of Alexis of Russia, 2nd tsar from Romanov dynasty).

The entire Imperial family, the Tsar as Alexei I, the Tsaritsa
as Maria Miloslavskaya, all dressed in rich 17th century attire,
posed in the Hermitage's theatre, many wearing priceless
original items brought specially from the Kremlin, for what
was to be their final photograph together

through the woods and fields, and collected the feathers
which had fallen from the wings of his companions, and
stuck them in all parts of his body. When the appointed day
arrived, and the birds had assembled before Jupiter, the
Jackdaw also made his appearance in his many-feathered
finery. On Jupiter proposing to make him king, on account
of the beauty of his plumage, the birds indignantly protested,
and each plucking from him his own feathers, the Jackdaw
was again nothing but a Jackdaw

The nightclub 'Kabarett Fledermaus' in Vienna
opened in October 1907. The program for the first season
provides a permanent record of the nightclub's entertainments.
In 1907, the Wiener Werkstätte, a cooperative of architects,
artists, and designers as well as the preeminent producer of luxury
goods and furnishings in the city, opened the nightspot and performing
arts space. It was created to dispel boredom with doses of avant-garde
theater and poetry readings taken with the latest cocktail creations.
As recorded in the program, this mix of high and low culture
included a shadow play by the young Expressionist Oskar
Kokoschka, music and dance performances, and a parody
of a mythological love story

In 1908 the building 'Kunstschau', Vienna was created
under the energy of Josef Hoffmann, Gustav Klimt,
Otto Prutscher, Koloman Moser and many others, to coincide
with the celebrations in Vienna for the sixtieth anniversary
of emperor Francis Joseph I’s reign – even though they
were not invited to take part in the official celebrations.

The wooden building and surrounding area, spread over
6,500 square was erected remarkably quickly in a few
months and included over 50 exhibition rooms, courtyards,
gardens, a café, and even a small cemetery.
Can you imagine anything on this scale now?

The artworks included in this exhibition include paintings
by Carl Moll, early works by Franz Kupka, and pieces by
Max Oppenheimer and many lesser known painters as
well as 'The Kiss' by Gustav Klimt. All in all the exhibition
brought together the work of 179 artists
